Our Sunday Service
Our service is held Sunday mornings at 10:00 AM. It generally lasts until 11:00 AM, and is followed by a social time. Click here for complete directions. We also have an adult bible study available before the service at 9:00 AM. You may want to check out our pastor's previous sermons.
Here's what to expect when you come to the Sunday service at Auburn Presbyterian Church.
BEFORE YOU COME
Are you someone who feels that you should honor the Lord by dressing in your Sunday best? Or do you think that the outward appearance doesn't matter so much to God? Either way, you'll be fine at APC. We have men in dress slacks and ties and men in shorts and t-shirts (at least in summer). Some women wear dresses, some wear jeans. Whatever your style, you'll feel at home.
OUR PLACE
Auburn Presbyterian Church is located on a beautiful lot loaded with trees and flowers. You'll find ample, convenient parking. If you need assistance, someone will be glad to help.
You'll see a large building, which is our sanctuary, and a mobile building that serves as our office. Please join us in the sanctuary.
COME ON IN
As you come through the door, some very friendly people will welcome you. If you are a visitor, they'll ask you to fill out a record for us, and they'll give you a welcome folder that will tell you more
about our church. If you have children, our folks will help you find the right place for them.
Do you hate those moments when you encounter someone whose name you think you should know, but you just can't recall it? We hate those too, so all our people have nametags. As a visitor, you'll get a stick-on badge at first, but if you come back a couple times, we'll print one up for you.
As you proceed into the sanctuary, you'll be greeted again by some other folks who will give you a bulletin. In addition to announcements, this has a thought or question to prepare you for worship, and a prayer of confession that will be a part of the service later.
Before the service starts, various announcements will appear on the screen at the front of the sanctuary.
THE SERVICE
Right before the service is to begin, our worship team will play a song. This is the equivalent of the dimming lights in a theater, a sign to wrap up whatever you are doing and find your seats.
Our worship leader for the day will welcome everyone and cover a few announcements. Then we'll have a few minutes of saying hello to one another. Please let the rest of us have the opportunity to greet you.
During the service, a small notebook in which we track attendance will come around. Please complete the record when it gets to you. Your first time, we ask you to fill it out completely. (Yes, we know you may have provided similar information in the lobby. Indulge us.) Later, just your name and a check in the appropriate box will suffice.
Singing
After the greetings, we'll have a time of singing. Our music is mix of traditional hymns, current praise choruses, and some classic praise songs. There may be one singer, or a group, a single musician or several.
Lyrics for our songs will appear on the screen in the front of the sanctuary.
After our first song, our children are dismissed to Sunday School.
Sometimes we will have special presentations. They will take place during this part of the service.
Prayer of Confession
After a couple songs, we'll have our prayer of confession. We believe it is important each week to acknowledge that we are sinners before a holy God. We will together recite the prayer of confession that is in the bulletin (and on the screen), and then we'll pause a moment to make this prayer our own. After, the worship leader will remind us of the glorious news that we are not lost in our sin—we are promised Christ's forgiveness. We all acknowledge and give thanks that we are forgiven.
More Worship
After our confession, we will have another song. Then we will have an opportunity to worship the Lord through the giving of tithes and offerings. There will be some sort of music during this time. It might be an instrumental, or a solo, or our choir.
Prayer Time
We think it is very important to come before the Lord in prayer, and we take a few moments within our service to do so. It is not possible to have everyone speak a complete prayer. So our pastor will lead us. He'll first ask that we give praise and thanks to God. You'll hear people throughout the room offering praise or mentioning something for which they are thankful. Some speak out loud, some whisper softly, some pray silently. God hears it all. Please do whatever you are comfortable with.
After praise and thanks, we'll pray for people we know who need healing or help during some stressful time of life. Then we'll pray for people who do not yet know Jesus. Finally, we will lift up nations and their leaders. This format may seem unusual, but it is a precious time to dwell on the Lord and to bring these people and places before him.
We finish this time of prayer by reciting the Lord's Prayer, saying "debts" and "debtors." It will be on the screen.
Sermon
At this point, we will hear the word of God in a sermon. You can check out our pastor's sermons for a taste of what he has to say.
Communion
On the first Sunday of the month, we have communion. Our children will return from Sunday School for this. Sometimes we go up front, sometimes the elements are passed out. All who have been baptized into the Lord Jesus are welcome to partake.
Closing Song and Benediction
The service will conclude with a final song, and a word of blessing and dismissal from our pastor.
Afterward
Please join us outside (or in the lobby if the weather is bad) for a variety of goodies and beverages, and a time of enjoying one another's company.
