Healing Service
When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
Matthew 14:14, NIV
Healing was not just a sideline to the ministry of Jesus—the gospels are full of accounts of the healing he did. Nor did his healing end when he returned to the Father. Jesus still heals today. On the second Sunday of every month APC conducts a time of healing ministry immediately after the worship service.
During this time, a team of ministers gathers to praise God and apply Jesus’ healing authority for all who wish healing for themselves or others. If you would like prayer for yourself or someone you care for, please come and see what God will do. We welcome anyone who wants to come for special prayer for healing of body, mind, or spirit for themselves or for someone who is not present.
What can you expect during the ministry time? There are two or three healing stations set up at the sides and back of the room. When the time for ministry comes, the congregation is dismissed. People seeking healing or aiding the ministry by interceding during the ministry time stay. Those seeking healing come one at a time to a prayer station. People can also come for healing by proxy; that is, they ask for healing of someone not present, which is supported in Scripture. Those who come tell the team what the issue is. Then the team offers to anoint the person on the forehead with olive oil, as is often found in Scripture. Then the team leader will pray in the name and authority of Jesus. As that ministry concludes, the team will give the person a form and return envelope so that the team can learn how the healing continues to progress in the days to come.
Previously, we had a special service for the healing ministry. If you'd like to review the text of the sermons of this year, you may click here.
Team members have received training from leaders of the Nevada County chapter of Healing Rooms, a movement of healing started in Spokane, Washington, some years ago.
Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.
How This Ministry Came to Be
Pastor Ken had been wanting a ministry like this for several years but waited for the Lord’s timing. Jerry and Silva Stearn moved to Cool from Sunnyvale where Silva had been actively involved in First Presbyterian Church of Sunnyvale’s prayer and healing ministry. She mentioned the ministry to Pastor Ken when she and Jerry joined APC.
People known to be interested in prayer were invited to meet together to talk about the possibilities for such a service. Some had had some experience in praying for people; others had never even witnessed it. Silva and Bev Anderson went to the training conference held by people active in the ministry of The Healing Rooms of Nevada County. They brought the information and printed material back and taught the others what they had learned. A number of meetings were held for practice where each person in the group received prayer and participated in praying for others. Specific plans were made.
When the group thought they were ready, they announced the first service, which was conducted on the third Friday of every month except one until October 2007. After a successful post-service ministry time in September, the ministry team believed the church would be better served at this time by having the ministry after the service once a month. On each such day, members of the team gather at 8:30 AM to pray for the service, then set up the stations and arrange other physical aspects of the service. After the ministry time, everything is rearranged and the team assembles for debriefing and prayer.
On the first Monday afternoon, the team meets to plan the service for the next month to be sure someone is assigned to take care of each detail. On odd numbered months, this is followed by what is called the Formation Meeting. It is further training but also a time when new people come to learn more about it to see if they want to be part of the team.
The ministry at APC is somewhat different from the way it is done in the Healing Rooms ministries. They have a team in each of several rooms. Those prayed for are interviewed in some depth prior to receiving prayer. It is not preceded by a service as is done at APC. Ours is basically following the First Presbyterian Church of Sunnyvale model with additions from the Healing Room experience.
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
