About Grace's Work with Paz y Esperanza

Gracie Michel is currently involved with Latin American Mission, serving in Lima, Peru with Paz y Esperanza (Peace and Hope), a Christian bon-governmental organization whose mission is to promote justice and sustainable development among poor and excluded people.

Grace works in Paz y Esperanza's Transform Project, which trains and equips Christian leaders and churches among the urban poor through holistic mission. "Holistic" means that the mission of the church touches every part of the person's life and the life of their community. This includes spiritual, relational, financial, educational, environmental, and similar areas. The Transform Project aims to form servant leaders among poor churches. The project works with a network of evangelical churches in the marginalized urban district of San Juan de Lurigancho, Lima, promoting holistic projects that give dignity to the people being served and that can be implemented using resourses from the churches.

Projects that are underway include:

  • Educational reinforcement programs for kids
  • Microenterprise handicraft businesses
  • Community kitchens
  • Environmental sustainability projects
  • Sexual abuse prevention education

The goal of the Transform project is to train and equip servant leaders from these churches with an understanding that the mission of the church is to bring hope and healing to all areas of the life of individuals and community and society.  Most of this training is done through seminars, workshops, Bible studies, and events on relevant topics.  The topics being focused on this year include domestic and sexual abuse prevention, environmental stewardship, disaster preparedness, Biblical perspectives on gender and sexuality, and prayer campaigns against political injustice.
