Auburn Interfaith Food Closet
The Auburn Interfaith Food Closet provides emergency food and other provisions to people in Auburn, Meadow Vista, Newcastle, Ophir, Penryn, Loomis, Bowman, Applegate, Weimar, and Colfax.
Today several members of Auburn Presbyterian Church volunteer to stock shelves, bag food, register families, buy food, staff the Stuff-a-Bus fundraising projects, serve on the Board, and collect contributions of bags, egg cartons, and non-perishable food placed into the green hamper by members of our congregation. All participating congregations can send two members to serve on the AIFC board of directors. APC's current board members are Max Kane and Craig George, who serves as Treasurer.
THE GREEN HAMPER
Under the coat rack in the narthex stands a green hamper quietly awaiting items for the Auburn Interfaith Food Closet. Please place any of the follow in the hamper:
- Empty egg cartons
- (AIFC buys eggs in bulk and packages them for distribution in contributed cartons.)
- Large, brown, handled bags
- (AIFC packs food to give to individuals and families in these bags.)
- Canned or packaged non-perishable food
- Unopened travel-sized bottles of lotion, soap, and shampoo
- (When traveling, have a small plastic bag in your suitcase to bring these back.)
- Children's spiritual books
- (Please see below for more information.)
Each week, one of APC’s volunteers at AIFC collects the items in the hamper and takes them to the Food Closet. They are delighted to find an ample supply in the hamper.
SPONSOR-A-FAMILY
The “Sponsor-A-Family” Program has become the largest source of financial support for the Auburn Interfaith Food Closet. In fact, for 2006, those donations represented 52% of the income from all sources. Many APC people regularly contribute to Sponsor-A-Family. For as little as $12.00 per month for one year, a local needy family of three can receive a three-day supply of emergency food. If you would like to become a Sponsor-A-Family donor, information packets are available in the church.
CHILDREN'S BOOKS
For some time now, the Auburn Interfaith Food Closet has offered free books to the children of clients who come in to receive emergency food items. To date, almost all of these books have been secular in nature. Now the Food Closet would like to supplement those reading offerings to also include age-appropriate books with a spiritual content. If you have spiritual books geared for children, that you would like to donate, please contact Max Kane or Craig George, or just place them in the big green plastic hamper in the narthex. AIFC seeks to provide food for the soul as well as for the body!
